Private Health Insurance
What is Private Health Insurance?
Private Health Insurance (PHI) — also known as Private Medical Insurance (PMI) — is a policy that covers the cost of private medical treatment for acute, short-term illnesses or injuries.
It allows individuals to bypass NHS waiting lists and access diagnosis, treatment, and aftercare at private hospitals and clinics, often with the ability to choose when and where treatment takes place.
Private Health Insurance is available both personally (for individuals or families) and through employers as part of a Group Health Insurance scheme.
How does it work?
With a Private Health Insurance policy:
- You pay a monthly or annual premium to an insurer.
- If you develop a condition that’s covered, the insurer pays for your private medical treatment, subject to any excess or limits on your policy.
- Treatment is carried out at approved private hospitals or medical centres, with access to consultants, specialists, and private rooms.
Cover typically includes:
- Consultations and diagnostic tests (such as MRI scans or X-rays).
- Hospital treatment and surgery.
- Post-operative care and physiotherapy.
- Cancer cover, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Many policies can be tailored with optional extras such as:
- Mental health support and counselling.
- Dental and optical cover.
- Therapies and alternative treatments.
